Attention PC Gamers!
/grumble

Okay, here's the deal, there's this company, an evil evil company, that has probably already damaged your machine and you may not even know it!
I just went through the detection steps and found that I somehow acquired it, probably from one the demo disks I get, or a demo I downloaded...
Then had to download the removal software...
It seems to have worked, so let's see if it makes a difference!
Anyway, if you know folks that play pc games, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, let them know!
(I've included some helpful links at the bottom)

A lot of PC gamers have joined together, and decided not to purchase any PC games that use the Starforce copy protection method. This site is here to provide information about the Starforce protection method, so that you can make your own informed decision.

I will provide a list of games that install the Starforce device drivers, as well as a list of publishers that incorporate Starforce. If you wish to join this boycott, we encourage you to write the publisher, or post on their forum, and let them know.

This site tries to continue the work of R.I.P. boycottstarforce.org, we have no clue why it went down.
What is Starforce?

Starforce is a software copy protection tool installed by PC game publishers, which is designed to prevent the casual copying of retail CDROM applications. It installs as a hidden device driver, without the end-user's knowledge or consent.
Why are we boycotting it?

Starforce has received criticism for installing its own device driver onto computers. The Starforce drivers are often linked to system instability and computer crashes. If these problems occur, the end-user would be unware as to the cause of the problem, and would be helpless to solve the problem.

For example, here's one of the common problems brought by Starforce: under Windows XP, if packets are lost during the reading or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually unusable. In some circumstances certain drives cannot cope with this mode and it results in physical hardware failure (Most commonly in multiformat CD/DVD writer drives). A sure sign of this step down occurring is that the burn speeds will get slower and slower (no matter what speed you select to burn at). Starforce, on a regular basis, triggers this silent step down. Until it reaches the latter stages most people do not even realise it is happening.

Here's what Greg Vederman, PC Gamer editor-in-chief, experienced:

I'm okay with that in theory, but some of these anti-piracy software programs are so potent that they cause issues for legitimate game buyers. One of the leading brands, StarForce, is notorious for not only making it difficult for a small percentage of legitimate users to load up StarForce-protected games, but also for leaving potentially problem-causing StarForce software behind on your PC, even after you've deleted the game it was protecting. And this isn't just some story that I've read about online or in emails from readers. No, it happened to me.

Last year, my work PC suddenly began blue-screening (crashing) any time I popped an audio CD into either of my two optical drives. I went online and learned that other people were having this problem and that it appeared to be StarForce-related. Deleting my StarForce-protected games did nothing. I had to run a StarForce-removal utility before my system - filled only with legal, licensed software - could play audio CDs again.

Broken Starforce CD It has been reported by many users that the slowdown caused by StarForce on some recent multiformat DVD writers can cause irreversible hardware failures on those drives (they aren't recognized anymore), as they aren't supposed to write at slow speeds.

Moreover, the Starforce drivers, installed on your system, grant ring 0 (system level) privileges to any code under the ring 3 (user level) privileges. Thus, any virus or trojan can get OS privileges and totally control your system. Since Windows 2000, the Windows line security and stability got enhanced by separating those privileges, but with the Starforce drivers, the old system holes and instabilities are back and any program (or virus) can reach the core of your system by using the Starforce drivers as a backdoor.

Even the Starforce officials admits their software is not 100% copyproof, and that it's causing a lot of trouble to the users:

"The purpose of of copy protection is not making the game uncrackable - it is impossible. [...] After several months of sails even we recommand the publishers to release patches that remove the copy protection just to make the game play more comfortables to the customers." Captured source, from the official Starforce forum.

Indeed, Starforce isn't really doing its job, and it's causing so much trouble to the users that the Starforce team itself ask the game publishers to remove it. Enough said.

Detect it here... http://www.glop.org/starforce/detect.php
Remove it here... http://www.glop.org/starforce/remove.php
Games List here (Wow, that's a lot of games!)... http://www.glop.org/starforce/list.php

Sat Mar 11, 3:14 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - Sex Pistols lead singer
John Lydon says harassing fans, such as those who threw bottles at the band at a Danish music festival, are "the very people we hate the most."

Lydon, known as Johnny Rotten in the iconic British '70s punk band, also panned animal activists and the anti-abortion movement during his appearance Friday on bandmate Steve Jones' radio show, called "Jonesy's Jukebox."

"We're Sex Pistols; we ain't fake," said Lydon, reminiscent of the band's snarling late bassist, Sid Vicious.

"And we don't care," Jones replied.

Later on, Lydon reflected on the band's heyday, quick breakup and 1996 world reunion tour, but said he couldn't do it again, citing stage fright and infighting.

"I miss the Sex Pistols. I miss the lot of you," he said. "But if anybody thinks it's a jolly good wheeze, it's not. It's hard work."

Judge Says CBGB's Can't Be Evicted
By ELIZABETH LeSURE, Associated Press Writer Thu Aug 11,12:54 AM ET
NEW YORK - A civil court judge ruled Wednesday that the landmark punk club CBGB's can't be evicted from its Bowery location, saying it shouldn't be punished for not noticing it owed its landlord money.

The ruling was a victory for the club where groups like the Ramones and Blondie defined the punk scene in the 1970s, but CBGB's future is still uncertain.

Its lease with the Bowery Residents' Committee expires on Aug. 31, and a renewal remains up in the air.

The executive director of the Bowery Residents' Committee, Muzzy Rosenblatt, said he had not seen the ruling so he could not comment on it.

"All we're looking for is a responsible tenant," he said of his group, which provides shelter for homeless people in the building that houses the club.

The dispute involved about $100,000 in rent increases, interest and fees. The club says the increases went unpaid for four years because of a bookkeeping mix-up. CBGB's said it wasn't billed for the increases, but Rosenblatt said the increases were clearly stated in the lease. CBGB's rent is $19,000 a month.

In her ruling, Judge Joan Kenney praised the club's impact on the neighborhood, which she said was plagued by "destitution, degradation and substance abuse" when the club opened in 1973.

"CBGB has proven itself worthy of being recognized as a landmark — a rare achievement for any commercial tenant in the ever diverse and competitive real estate market of New York City," she wrote in the ruling, a copy of which was provided to The Associated Press by the Save CBGB's Coalition.

"It would be unconscionable for this court to allow petitioner to proceed with its intent to evict CBGB ... because it failed to notice that monies were outstanding for approximately four years," the judge wrote.

As part of its proposal for a new lease, CBGB's has said it would find a third-party guarantor and would raise money for the committee every year with benefit concerts.

By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - There's a thin line, as Tommy Ramone learned, between therapy and documentary.

"Someone sticks a mike in front of you, and all of a sudden you start blabbering all the things that were on your mind for the past 30 years," said the original drummer for the seminal punk band, explaining the process behind last year's Ramones documentary. "So maybe a little bit of that was happening."

The result: "End of the Century," which debuted to critical acclaim in theaters last August and is now available on DVD. The band members, whose song catalogue includes such studies of the human psyche as "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" and "Psycho Therapy," are unflinchingly honest in their self-assessments.

"It's accurate," guitarist Johnny Ramone said of the finished product before his death. "It left me disturbed."

There's a frank discussion about Johnny stealing singer Joey's girlfriend, which caused a schism in the band that never healed. Bassist Dee Dee details his sad departure from the Ramones, while both he and Johnny level cheap shots at Tommy's drumming.

"That wasn't brutal honesty, it was brutal rationalization," Tommy recalled with a laugh of their pointed comments. "It was sort of a loaded question ... The questions, basically, tried to point out whether I was important or not, and that was the wrong question to ask people who are very protective of their turf."

"End of the Century" takes its title from the band's ill-fated 1980 collaboration with producer Phil Spector, who memorably pulled a gun on Dee Dee in the recording studio. The documentary was created over six years by New York-based filmmakers Michael Gramaglia and Jim Fields, two lifelong fans of punk music.

There are extensive interviews with all the Ramones except Joey, who died of cancer at 49 before he could sit down with the duo. (Johnny also was killed by cancer, at 55, and Dee Dee died at 50 from a drug overdose.) Other seminal figures of the punk era, including Sire Records chief Seymour Stein (a new Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee), the Clash's Joe Strummer and Ramones manager Danny Fields sit down to recount their recollections.

Nearly three decades after the Ramones' debut album, the 53-year-old Tommy is the last of the band's original quartet still alive. His shoulder-length hair, peeking out from beneath a wool watch cap, is streaked with gray. His goatee is white, and the face is wrinkled as he recalls his first viewing of the film.

"I liked the fact that there's a lot of historical footage in there that shows the significance of the band, and how we got together," he says. "And then it went into basically the trials and tribulations of being in a band with such talented but troubled people."

Tommy Ramone offered one criticism: "I'm not sure it shows the Ramones' sense of humor and its wit," he observed. "But by the time they started making the movie, there wasn't much of that around."

To me being punk isn't about a type of music. Sure, there's music that people call punk...we could all name some bands that are without a doubt punk rock (The Clash, The Ramones, The Sex Pistols) but in reality you get a roomful of so-called punks together and with a few noted exceptions none will agree on which bands are punk and which aren't (a perfect example being Goldfinger) so really the music is a side effect and has very little to with being punk rock.

Being punk isn't about how you dress or your political views (though a lot of people would disagree with me), it isn't about hating people who are conformists or music that uses more then 3 chords. Being punk isn't about hate, it never was.

The true punk knows that what you wear is irrelevant or almost. See being punk is about being yourself. Plain and simple. It's not being afraid to stand up for that which you believe in. It's PEACEFUL protest of the things you are against. Punk is allowing others to be themselves with contempt or disgrace. Punk is being in a room of people that look nothing like you and still accepting them and listening to their points of view even when you don't agree. Punk is about not doing what's mainstream just because it's mainstream as well as not doing what's unconventional just because it's unconventional. It's about doing what's right for you without fear of prosecution and at the same time it's about being willing to die for your cause whatever that cause may be.

You see I never considered myself a punk. Not for a very long time, sure I liked the music, but there were so many things about "punk" that I didn't like. For instance...the asinine belief that if a band makes money they have sold out and therefore are no longer punk, the theory that if you were stuff from Hot Topic or The Gap then you are a loser, that if you eat meat you can't really be a punk and so many other stupid things, but I've come to learn that that's not true punk. That's MTV punk (and some people I know would kill me for saying that), that's the punk that gives punk a bad reputation. True punks are not like that, true punks believe in live and let live. True punks are willing to talk to anyone and give them a chance because we see that we can learn from all others. True punk isn't about music or clothing...it's about you and me and all of the other people. It's about learning and trying to be something other then what MTV tells us to be.

So yeah, maybe I don't always look it and maybe I have a soft spot in my soul for Garth Brooks, but when it gets down to it, I'm as punk as they come. And if you don't like it...tough. Oi!

So that's may opinion or at least part of it. You always come up with more after the fact though. I want to hear your thoughts on the subject. What do you think makes punk rock?

Howdy! I'm Riley. I've been hanging out in this scene for about 8 months now and I love it. Love the music love the people. Fav locals would have to be (though I shouldn't say this cause I know there's a band member floating around here somewhere) The Potty Mouth (Moth) Society, Subjekt to Change, Botox Aftermath, Three Found Dead, and Mea Culpa. Plus about fifty million others that I see all the time, but whatever I decided to pick favorties. Really I love all types of music, but punk is my new passion. I like PBR...a lot. I wanted to start this tribe to introduce people to new bands and hopefully find some new bands for myself, to make a place where we could list shows, write reviews, and generally share that which I love with others because really isn't that what it's all about. Oh and my favorite munchie is toaster strudels.

I was under the impression that it meant that your principles were for sale, that an indeterminate sum had changed hands and now you were under command.

Went to the Funhouse the other night to see the Potty Mouth Society. Yeah there were a couple other bands there but I'm not going to lie, if PMS is on a bill I'm there to see them. The fact that I brought the lead singer to show and am good friends with 3 of the 4 PMS boys could have somehting to with that, but I don't think it does. The truth is that Potty Mouth is my ideal. Here's a group of guys with real talent and the energy to pull off a great show with only a few people in the audience(which is a lot more difficult than pulling off a good show to a packed house) Phil is a great frontman, he uses facial expressions to really push across the meaning of his lyrics and he takes the time to look each person in the eye and really draws you in and makes you feel like you are a part of what's happening. Hans is an amazing guitarist though I think that comes across better is his other project the "Wilderness Children." Don't get me wrong he gets to have some fun with PMS too and since the boys got a new bassist last September you can really tell that they are having fun. Andy the drummer could compete with quite a good collection of punk rock drummers though I would say he's extraordinary he does what he's supposed too: keeps a beat and holds the band together. Really (though never tell the others I said this) I think what makes PMS great is their newest edition. Tim their bassist brings a new energy and new attitude to PMS that really pushes them out of the realm fo good and into the realm of great. He's even begun writing songs for the band and he really pulls off some AMAZING bass lines. I look forward to getting a good solo from him everytime I see the boys play. The other acts of the evening were Joule out of Alberta, Motorama from Vancouver, B.C. and Knuckle Under. Okay let me just get this out of the way...I'm a bad reviewer I don't this it's not my way, but I figure I'll try right. But of course it's all my opinion I just hope someone will read this and be inspired to go to a local show and write their own damned review. What I'm trying to get at is this, if I think a band sucks I'm going to say so and I may not have any good way of backing it up. That said. Joule sucks!!!! Why you ask? Because every song sounded the same and none of them sounded pleasant. Fair enough, I like bands that I can understand the words, when every song sounds like "AHHHHH...aahhhh" I lose interest very quickly. BUt hey...that's me. Motorama on the other hand is a band that I have ALWAYS enjoyed. Good Canadian punk rock. What more can I say? Knuckle Under is a band out of Tacoma and this was my first time seeing them. Unfortunatly I was really busy having a headache during their set and couldn't really fill you in on how it was. I seem to remember enjoying it underneath the pain, but I was basiclly in tears at this point and kind of useless when it came to paying attention and making an intelligent decision on the band. I apologize.

*BEAR THIS IN MIND...* I am starting this thread admitting that I have sufficient ignorance about one or both of these scenes. So there -- you don't get to call me a stupid so-and-so after this w/o making yourself look like an arse.

Rock-a-Billy -- here's a whole 'nother music scene who's overall following seems similar in ways to punk. Both scenes have gotten very little above ground notice -- say, maybe Green Day and Social Distortion and little else. Both have a charactre of rebellious roots, and a "bastard" style of their general brand of music*.

Does anyone have any historical knowledge, or words of opinion, that relate these two forms in origin, or are these two forms coincidentally the bastard forms of 2 kinds of rock.

(*Note -- if you look up "punk" and "bastard" in the dictionary & thesaurus, you'll find they are 2 words that mean the same thing -- so to say "punk rock" is to say "bastard rock"... in case ya didn't know already.)

There are very few details available yet, but I will try to keep you all informed. If you wish, Dave's sister has left a beautiful message to all of us on the bands official website www.deadmilkmen.com
This is a huge loss to the punk commmunity as well as the human race period. He will be sorely missed.

Ethan:

hmm seems to me that punk and pipes go together! I mean its hard to beat those little irish bands for energy with the pipes and such. But im also biased being a double reeder of the other sort in a previous life, the kind that actually has to be in tune on ocassion.

Blacky:

You need to figure out how to make punk pipes.

Rev. Elvis D. Pelvis:

I hate to pop your polite dis, Riley, but Ethan's on the right track (short that these are both Irish and *Scottish* bands, or that either is small in number). Who is to define what is and is not punk -- short of the obvious that B.Spears, all that pop-pap-dross-GARBAGE, and other obvious forms of music is _not_ punk? I'm not talking about Simon Fraser University Pipe & Drum Corps here; I'm not talking about military groups like the Gordon ’s or the Black Watch that are famous among traditional piping and drumming; I'm talking about 2 groups that spit as much beer onto the audience, flash their dicks, have as much studded leather, rebellious lyrics, contrary-to-mainstream music style, f'ed-up haircuts, and passion as your standard issue unsung band practicing in a garage on a Saturday night with the same old bass, lead, drums & mouthpiece. Just because these guys have the hoodspa, skill, and creativity to add non-standard instruments like pipes, tin whistle, accordion, acoustic guitar, mandolin and other instruments, you're going to tell me that they are not punk? That they are one with Simon Fraser University Pipe Band.... Geeze! What "music" are you listening to? I tell ya -- you haven't lived until Paul McKenzie has lifted the aprons of his kilt mid show, displayed his un-circumcised cock, and then given his audience the finger in some shit-hole dive that no one is going to remember but punk enthusiasts. Likened to the historically recent inception of pipes in Ireland followed by Scotland, given their time and use in some cases, I agree with what a few other folks have blethered to me that pipes/pipers are the original punks -- in the face of the man (oh, and BTW, down w/ whitey *wink*). I don't have to argue that The McKenzies and The DKM's are punk -- they present their own case, if anyone else notices or likes it or not.

Riley:

All right all right I take it back. Moment of closed mindedness on my part. I apologize.

Rev. Elvis D. Pelvis:

;) Danka baby :D Have you see either group? Honestly, IMO, The McKenzies are more of a punk band while The DKM's come off in ways almost like a 1/2 punk band and 1/2 rock-a-billy or something... which somehow strikes me as punk-relative or, well, something. Hmm, there's a different thread idea. (I am the epitome of envy of a piper friend of mine -- she's spending a 3 month school quarter in Glasgow, hoppin' and boppin' around, practicing and getting instruction at The College Of Piping, and is getting to see both The McKenzies and The DKM's while there -- and going to Dublin for 4 days around St. Patrick's Day -- WHAT A TRIP. While I'm envious, I also couldn't be happier for her.)

Ethan:

if you dont like pipes, what would you say to a lute? Im a big flogging molly fan and theyve got a lute player....kick ass Even if they aren't 'Hard Core' that guy is a crazy man, he downed a bottle of 151 while on stage last time I saw them, impressed me almost as much as the show itself.

Rev. Elvis D. Pelvis:

Who are you asking about dis/liking (Highland, I presume) pipes*?

Because that would deffinitely be me... Oh yeah, crazy F'ed-up instrument -- who in their right mind would play the damn'ed things? ME

I haven't caught FMolly yet -- want to -- hope to hear here about the next time they're going to be in town -- I want to see 'em.

(*For those who are unawares -- bear in mind that there are _many_ different kinds of pipes. To say "pipes" out of context is like saying "vehicle" -- are you talking about a car, hot air balloon, snow mobile, moped, etc? So are we talking about 1 of the 6 or so kind of Scottish pipes, 1 of the 2 or more kinds of pipes that the Irish have played, Greek pipes, Turkish pipes, Pakistan pipes, Chillean pipes, Russian pipes...?)

Blacky:

Goat pipes are punk rock!

Rev. Elvis D. Pelvis:

I've started working on getting the picture I told you about -- asked lately on a piping forum I'm a part of. Some one came up with a link for me to some American hippy folk musician guy who seems to think highly of himself. He plays some kind of funky looking pipes with a curved chanter (looks like a toy sax) and a big white furry bag. Not what I was looking for. Anyhoo, I'll let you know if the blokes on the forum come up with anything -- they're usually pretty good.

Riley;

Actually I'm rather fond of pipes...at least with my limited experience. I like funky shit in music. Any by funky I just mean non-mainstream instruments..like the electric violin I would kill to hear a good punk violinist. As far as hard-core goes it's one of those things that I don't really get. There's a lot about punk that I don't get and that term is on the top of the list. But that's another tangent for a day when my brain is better equipped to handle it.

Ethan:

Sorry to beat a dead horse but Flogging Molly has an electic violin, so yeah much beer and time for bed to get up for horid class in 5 houtrs ick

TaiJiMao:

I'd have to back you on Flogging Molly.

I'm all about the cello, myself. That's the damn sexiest string instrument there is. And they come in an electric version.

Also, oddly, accordions. But, then, I love me some Tom Waits but good.

Riley:

Do they, never noticed! That's freaking awesome. But I think I said I realy like them. If not I really like Flogging Molly, at least what I've heard of them, which obviously hasn't been that much seeing as I failed to notice the violin. I should really go pick up an album, any suggestions on which one?

Ethan:

Personally I like Swagger, also anyone know anything about schoolyard heros? They were much more than I expected when I saw them last night!

Riley:

I've hear one song of their's and must say it enjoyed but I don't know anything about them. Aren't they from like Bellingham or something? Don't know really, the End's played them a few times. Had I known they were in town I would have checked it out. You should do a review!

Ethan:

Only thing I know about them is what I read from the stranger a while back, I know they are like really young, and the guitarist has a pretty kick ass fro. They seem to go back and forth between kinda poppy chorus, and then a really heavy verse. When a band describes itself as sci-fi horror rock, and introduces a song as being about two robots in an intergalactic battle to the death, they have at least got to be fun. Not only did they have nice contrast, and a good stage presence, but they also had very clean guitar play with clever and interesting rhythms. Yeah they were much better than expected, maybe even rivaling the presidents in terms of how much I enjoyed the show, so much so that I plan on seeing them again this comming saturday with endetta red, umm i forget where they are playing, here ya go 3/13/04 - at The Vera Project in Seattle, WA (w/ Suffering and the Hideous Thieves, The Divorce and Schoolyard Heroes)
later!

Riley:

Wow I may have to go to that show as well. I like a few of those bands and it should be fun. Plus I haven't gotten a chance to check out the Vera Project yet. Hmm...shit I can't!!! That's the day of a very very very important PMS show with KNuckle Under and Lethal Rejection. Shit I'll have to see what time both of the shows are at and check out what I can check out. BUt if I'm not at the PMS show...they might kill me. Well, they'd be pissed at least.

To the best of what I've been able to come up with all they are is an excuse for a bunch of bands to get together and get really trashed...oh yeah...and play music....sometimes. But they are a lot of fun because like I said it's mostly just the band guys and then some of their friends show up. Last night there was actually a suprising number of newbies there. Which is good for the Stash Spot just odd for a house party. I still think my favorite was the Halloween Party but only because it wasn't promoted at all so if you were there it is because someone invited you which made me feel special. Anyway I just wanted to start a tangent about something, but I think I'm done now.

Well I knew when I saw Three Found a the lineup that the show was going to be hardcore, but I had no idea just what to expect. Turns out due to girlfriend drama the Three Found boys had to cancel and for some unknown reason a Death In California dropped off the tour and returned to Chicago a few days ago so the show ended up being but two bands: Failed Resitance (Chicago) and one of my new favorite locals Go Like Hell. Now I'm not much of a reviewer but I'll do my best.

Failed Resistance comes on first and I don't know what I'm expecting all I know if there are now 5 drunk punks in a small space and hailing from Chicago. I had been talking to the guitarist (Clint) prior to the show and he had been telling me how the Chicago scene is pretty voilent yeah, makes sence when you watch these boys. With an odd mix of 77 and hardcore styles of punk the energy coming out of that place was insane. Personally I think the Uptown helps any band it's this tiny dive bar with a screen behind where the bands play that at this moment is playing bumfights, they serve PBR and you order a shot and the bartender is taking one with you. Real great place to pack a bunch of punks, but Jahsh is taking it to a new level pulling the mic as far as he can and really interacting with the crowd, definatly a band that should be seen at a place like the Graceland. They were hard, fast, and fun. I can see why Chicago likes these boys.

Go Like Hell: I had the pleasure of helping the lead singer Alexi rat her mohawk before her set "I want to have the biggest hair in the place" yeah. Now I hate chick bands, always have but this female rocked harder then most men I see and she did it in six-inch heels and a red teddi. I think I'm in love. NOt only can this girl sing she had every boy and I think every female in the place wrapped around her finger. Yet again a band with high energy and a hard style. The band quotesa one of their biggest influences as Kiss which hopefully gives you and idea of what I mean but if not think about not only Alexi in her teddi and heels, but the drummer with his dreads the go down to his knees and the lead guitarist who is in his mid-thirties and also in a teddi. If I could describe these guys it would be something only the lines of Billy Idol meets Poison meets The Sex Pistols but that only begins to give you an idea.

My opinion go check them out. A little harder then what I usually vibe on, but worth any amount of cover charge. Even if it's just to watch Alexi molest the crowd.
